Breakfast Soup

closeup view of peach soup

Oh no, it is such a shame when we reach the end of a fruit season.  Sadly, but true, we are at the end of our local peach season.  Last week, we picked up a crate of the last peaches of the season from McLeod Farms in McBee, South Carolina.  It is about a 30 minute drive for us — well worth it.  We always enjoy a great lunch at Big’s Meats while we are at the farm.

No counting all the peaches we have already used, aka eaten, from the case, we put 35 cups of sliced peaches in the freezer.  Thinking…peach soup…peach cobbler…peach enchiladas…sangria… Fresh peaches from McLeod Farms, 35 cups frozen. Look at the rich red centers.  They are beautiful and delicious.

This morning we used some of the peaches to make Bloomsbury Cold Peach Soup.  Yes, soup for breakfast.  We are in the deep South, “cold” is always good.  Likewise we love to use old Southern recipes with Southern ingredients, peaches and buttermilk.

a pretty serving bowl of Bloomsbury Peach Soup, topped with just a little whipped cream.

Bloomsbury Inn Cold Peach Soup

  • 1 quart fresh peaches

  • 2 cups full fat buttermilk (yes, you can buy it in the grocery store)

  • 1 cup orange juice (we use high pulp…fresh when possible)

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • a pinch of cinnamon

  • whipped cream, fresh mint, vanilla bean yogurt fresh peach slices — whatever you like for garnish

Just put everything in the blender to reach the desired consistency.  We like it smooth, but we also love to see the beautiful red spects of the peach center.   Chill for 6+ hours before you serve it — it just gets better and better as you chill it longer.  Add a garnish and you have a beautiful breakfast starter.  P.S. This recipe is so easy to increase or decrease as desired.

Buttermilk!  You are thinking, oh yea that will be YUK.  Wrong.  Wrong.  Wrong.  Buttermilk is a beautiful, rich liquid left behind after churning butter out of cream.  It really is as good as it sounds.  Just as we were thinking peach above…let’s think buttermilk…cold fruit soup…piping hot biscuits…buttermilk pie…

We hope you can join us at Bloomsbury Inn real soon.  Our breakfast menu is amazing.  Today it was:

  • Fresh Ground Coffee from Little River Roasting Company

  • Cranberry White Grape Juice

  • Cold Peach Soup

  • Biscuits from Grandmother’s Iron Skillet

  • Omelet Lorraine, Southern Grits, Fresh Garden Tomato

We will be watching for your reservation.  Safe travels.
